Sports First Aid Courses for Coaches, Clubs & Fitness Professionals

Whether you coach junior football, lead a running club, manage a gym, teach fitness classes or work with professional sports teams, Emergency Response Training provides practical sports first aid courses designed for the environments in which you work.

Our experienced instructors deliver accredited first aid training at your venue anywhere across Yorkshire and nationwide, or you can join one of our open courses at our Doncaster training centre. We also offer flexible blended learning options combining online study with practical classroom training.

Our courses meet current workplace first aid standards whilst giving coaches the confidence to deal with common sporting injuries and medical emergencies until professional help arrives.

Which Sports First Aid Course Do I Need?

Choosing the correct sports first aid qualification depends on where you coach and how quickly emergency medical assistance can reach you. Many sports governing bodies, including UK Athletics, recommend different levels of first aid training based on the coaching environment.

Category A

Suitable for clubs, athletics tracks, sports centres and organised events where a qualified First Aider is immediately available.

UK Athletics states that all Coaches and Leaders must hold a Basic First Aid Training Certificate as the minimum standard, demonstrating their duty of care to athletes and participants.

Our recommended course:
Category A – Basic First Aid for Sport

Category B

Suitable for coaches delivering sporting activities where there is no First Aider immediately available and emergency assistance is expected within approximately 10–30 minutes.

UK Athletics recommends Coaches and Leaders hold an in-date First Aid Training Certificate appropriate to this environment.

Our recommended course:
Category B – Emergency First Aid at Work (Level 3) with Sports First Aid Module

This course meets the practical first aid needs of most sports clubs, community coaches, fitness instructors and running groups.

Category C

Suitable for remote or difficult-to-access locations where there is no First Aider available and emergency assistance may take longer than 30 minutes to arrive.

Examples include:

  • Fell running

  • Trail running

  • Cross-country events

  • Mountain activities

  • Remote outdoor coaching

UK Athletics requires an Outdoor First Aid Training Certificate with a minimum duration of two days. This is mandatory for the Fell Leadership in Running and Fitness (LiRF) and Fell Coaching in Running and Fitness (CiRF) licensing pathways.

Our recommended course: Category C – Outdoor First Aid (2 Days / 16 Hours)
