What Is Category B Sports First Aid?
UK Athletics identifies Category B environments as locations where coaches and leaders are delivering athletics activities without a first aider immediately available.
Category B is generally appropriate where emergency assistance is expected to take approximately 10 to 30 minutes to arrive. UK Athletics recommends that coaches and leaders working in these environments hold an in-date first aid training certificate as a minimum standard.
Our Emergency First Aid at Work and AED with Sports course is Emergency Response Training’s recommended option for Category B environments.
It provides broader training than a short basic first aid course and includes additional subjects relevant to coaches, running leaders and sports professionals.

Is Category B the Right Course?
The correct sports first aid course depends on the location of the activity, the availability of another first aider and how long emergency assistance is likely to take.
Category A: Suitable for established clubs, venues and events where designated emergency first aid provision is immediately available.
Category B: Suitable where a coach or leader is delivering activities without another first aider immediately available and help is expected within approximately 10 to 30 minutes.
Category C: A minimum two-day Outdoor First Aid course for remote or difficult-to-access environments where emergency assistance may take considerably longer to arrive.
