Basic First Aid for Sport Course – Category A

Essential First Aid Training for Sports Coaches and Leaders

Our 3.5-hour Basic First Aid for Sport Category A course provides coaches, leaders and sports volunteers with the essential skills needed to respond to common first aid emergencies.

The course is suitable for clubs, organised events and sports venues where designated emergency first aiders are normally available. It helps coaches and leaders demonstrate their duty of care and provides the basic first aid training recommended as a minimum standard within the UK Athletics framework.

Training is delivered on-site at your club, school, sports venue or workplace on a date and at a time that suits your organisation.

Course Price

£320 per group for up to 12 candidates

This group price provides an affordable way to train your coaches, leaders and volunteers together at your own venue.

Who Is This Course For?

The Basic First Aid for Sport Category A course is suitable for people who may need to provide immediate basic first aid within a sporting environment, including:

  • Athletics coaches and leaders

  • Running club coaches

  • Sports club volunteers

  • School sports coaches

  • Fitness instructors

  • Activity leaders

  • Team managers

  • Event volunteers

  • Leisure-centre employees

  • Coaches working at established sports venues

No previous first aid experience is required. Candidates must, however, be physically able to take part in the practical elements of the course.

What Is Category A Sports First Aid?

Many clubs, sports venues and organised events already have designated emergency first aiders available.

However, coaches and leaders still have a duty of care towards their athletes and participants. UK Athletics identifies a Basic First Aid Training Certificate as the minimum standard for coaches and leaders working within a Category A environment.

Category A is generally suitable where:

  • The activity takes place at an established club or sports venue

  • A designated first aider is immediately available

  • Emergency services can access the location quickly

  • Coaches require essential first aid awareness and practical skills

Coaches operating without an immediately available first aider, or in remote locations, may require a Category B or Category C qualification instead.

The 3.5-hour course includes:

Practical, Sports-Focused Training

Our training is practical and relevant to the environments in which coaches and sports leaders work.

Candidates are encouraged to take part in demonstrations, practical activities and realistic first aid scenarios. This helps them develop the confidence to recognise an emergency, call for appropriate assistance and provide immediate care until a designated first aider or the emergency services take over.

Not Sure Whether You Need Category A, B or C?

The appropriate course depends on the location of the activity, whether another first aider is immediately available and how long emergency assistance is likely to take to arrive.

Category A: Basic first aid training for established clubs, venues and events where emergency first aid provision is immediately available.

Category B: More comprehensive first aid training for activities where a first aider is not immediately available and help may take approximately 10–30 minutes to arrive.

Category C: A minimum two-day Outdoor First Aid course for remote or difficult-to-access environments where help may take considerably longer to arrive.

Contact our team and we will help you choose the most appropriate sports first aid course for your coaches and leaders.
