Emergency Priorities and Sending for Help

Candidates will learn how to carry out initial casualty checks, obtain help and provide clear information when contacting the emergency services.

This part of the course helps employees understand the importance of early recognition, prompt action and effective communication.

Dealing with an Unconscious Casualty

Candidates learn how to recognise when a casualty is unresponsive and how to carry out appropriate initial checks.

The training covers:

• Taking appropriate action if the casualty’s condition changes

Recovery Position

Candidates learn when and how to place an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally into the recovery position.

The practical session includes positioning the casualty safely, protecting the airway and continuing to monitor breathing until further assistance arrives.

Adult, Child Resuscitation

The course includes adult resuscitation and the actions to take when a casualty is unresponsive and not breathing normally.

Candidates will be introduced to:

• Recognising possible cardiac arrest

• Calling the emergency services

• Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation

• Maintaining effective chest compressions

• Continuing until further help takes over or the casualty shows signs of recovery

Training is supported by instructor demonstrations and practical participation using appropriate training equipment.

Choking

Candidates learn how to recognise the difference between mild and severe choking and how to provide appropriate assistance.

The course covers encouraging an effective cough, responding when the casualty cannot breathe or speak properly and knowing when emergency assistance is required.

Blood Loss and Shock

The course explains how to recognise and respond to external bleeding.

Candidates learn how to:

• Assess the casualty

• Apply direct pressure

• Use an appropriate dressing

• Reduce the risk of contact with bodily fluids

• Summon further medical assistance

• Recognise signs that the casualty may be developing shock

The session also covers the immediate care of a casualty showing signs and symptoms of shock while awaiting professional help.

Burns

Candidates learn the immediate treatment of burns, including the importance of cooling the injury promptly and protecting the affected area.

The instructor will also discuss when a burn requires urgent medical assessment and common mistakes that should be avoided.

Fractures

The course provides an introduction to recognising and managing suspected fractures.

Candidates learn how to support and reassure the casualty, avoid unnecessary movement and obtain appropriate medical assistance.

Heart Attacks

Candidates learn how to recognise possible signs and symptoms of a heart attack and take prompt action.

The course covers keeping the casualty comfortable, contacting the emergency services and monitoring the person while waiting for assistance.

Epilepsy and Seizures

The course includes recognising and assisting a person experiencing an epileptic seizure.

Candidates learn how to:

• Protect the casualty from injury

• Avoid restraining their movements

• Monitor the length of the seizure

• Provide appropriate care afterwards
